The Big Screen and Guildhall Square
There are some key moments when crowds are expected to flock to the Big Screen so they can say ‘I was there’ for some once-in-a-lifetime moments, including:
– 27 July – The Olympic Opening Ceremony: Danny Boyle’s ‘Isles of Wonder’ show will be watched by over a billion people around the world
– 4 August – Super Saturday: The day the most medals are won during the Olympic Games
– 5 August – 100 metre final: The moment the world holds it’s breath for just over 9 seconds
– 12 August – The Olympic Closing Ceremony: Kim Gavin’s ‘A Symphony of British Music’ is sure to have you dancing in the square
In addition to this, the Guildhall Square will be dressed with London 2012 branding, a spectator area, sports activities and a programme of live events throughout the summer bringing this event space to life as part of the Portsmouth Live Site experience.
So if you didn’t manage to get a ticket for the Games – then make sure you come to the Portsmouth Live Site to watch all the action as it happens.

A summer like no other
The national network of Live Sites has been growing since they were launched four years ago for the Beijing 2008 Games. London 2012 works in partnership with the BBC and the individual cities, as well as sponsorts BT, Lloyds TSB, Cadbury and Cisco – with support from National Lottery funding – to provide an event space in the heart of communities across the UK, broadcasting major sporting occasions together with great musical events.
Live Sites will be great places to celebrate a range of memorable occasions and major events, from The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee to the London 2012 Festival and Olympic Torch Relay. And then of course there’s a summer of world-class sport brought to you at the Live Sites by the BBC and Channel 4 with the Olympic and Paralympic Games!
London Live Sites
The capital’s Live Site programme is headlined, with major events in Hyde Park and Victoria Park during the Olympic Games and in Trafalgar Square during the Paralympic Games.
There’s also a choice of Live Sites in boroughs throughout London, with further information on these either listed individually on the left page, or on the Community Live Sites page.
Community Live Sites
These local sites are set up as temporary events and run for varying lengths of time, so you might find a local site for the Olympic Games Opening Ceremony – or maybe longer!
